![]() Do you live In a new house? Since 1990 most new house building has used plastic pipework for some or all of the internal pipework . This policy was - and still is - driven by building regulations rather than cost although there is also a considerable labour saving with plastic pipes. British Gas recognised soon afterwards that plastic plumbing does allow air ingress which accelerates corrosion. To counter this 'barrier pipe' with three internal layers was introduced.
However, barrier pipe is more expensive and many builders did not use it. Only after 2000 was it installed as the 'norm' .Problems will still occur with plastic pipework however, particularly on downstairs radiators and pipework with long horizontal circuits. During the hot summer of 2006 when heating systems were left off for long periods these problems were made worse. The symptoms that can indicate trouble with your plastic pipework are:
