The surname “Bingham” is derived from an Old English personal name, Bynna + ingahm (Old English).
On the Fosse Way, which ran between Isca (Exeter) and Lindum, the Romans built a fortress at Margidunum (Bingham) and a settlement at the river crossing at Ad Pontem (East Stoke) (Lincoln). The wapentake of Bingham was later formed in the south-east of Nottinghamshire. In 1341, Bingham obtained a market charter.
Bingham is located near the intersection of the A46 (which follows an old Roman road, the Fosse Way), which connects Leicester and Newark-on-Trent, and the A52, which connects Nottingham and Grantham. Radcliffe-on-Trent, East Bridgford, Car Colston, Scarrington, Aslockton, Whatton-in-the-Vale, Tithby, and Cropwell Butler are nearby communities.
